CASE STUDY  Stock Farm, Surrey

Customers requirements:  A hot water system capable of driving numerous outlets, including simultaneous supply to 2 bathrooms, and en-suit shower facilities. Six bedroom house, with large family and frequent guests.  All baths are fitted with large bore mixing taps, and the one shower is fitted with 4 body jets.

The problem was worsened by a lack of mains water pressure and a cupboard only 500mm deep and 1270mm wide to fit both boiler and cylinder. The family all like to bath or shower in the morning.  In our favor was the option of a new and sizable cold water tank, and a dedicated boiler.

Following a site survey and talks with both the contractors and the family, we were able to provide a detailed analysis in the form of complete water-load calculations.

Solution...

The figures showed that a 250 litre vented hot water cylinder with a plate heat exchanger recovery system, coupled to a Keston 80,000 btu boiler, should do the job nicely, with some spare capacity.  A specification was prepared as follows:

450mm x 1700mm Cylinder
Uncased, 35mm Foam
Fitted Plate Heat Exchanger
Boiler Pump & Bronze Circulating Pump
28mm CF & HWS
22mm Primary Flow & Return
One Immersion Heater, Incaloy Low Noise
Modulating Thermostatic Control
Pre-Fabricated & Pre-Wired
Primary Pressure Relief Valve with Gauge
12 litre Primary Expansion Vessel with Flexible Hose

The use of a plate heat exchanger to recover the store allowed the entire output of the boiler to be directed to heating up the top of the cylinder first, thereby backing up immediate demand.  Furthermore, the plate heat exchanger is relatively immune to limescale.

The unit was manufactured and delivered in 10 days.  As designed the cylinder fitted snuggly into the cupboard, allowing room for installation of the boiler to follow.
