The following diagrams explain the difference between a system that uses a typical pre-heat setup, and the DPS blended pre-heat setup. Figures will vary with storage sizes and temperatures.
All hot water has to flow through both the solar pre-heat store, and the mains hot water store, which is heated by the boiler.
The The efficiency gains from this setup will be greatest for systems that are undersized. Such systems may suffer from higher solar store temperatures, and hence reduced panel efficiency.
