Ask a question:

Red 365 Air stoves - using with an external room thermostat or programmer

Solution

To connect an external room thermostat to one of the Red Air range of stoves (Dalia, Margherita, Primula etc.) you should follow the following steps - these are also detailled in the Instaler and User Manual, Page 35:

  • Firstly, it must be noted that the input signal to the motherboard constituting the call for heat from the external thermostat is volt free: You cannot - Must Not - connect directly to the motherboard from a mains voltage programmer/thermostat. You would need to connect to the motherboard via a relay to give a clean, voltage free input, if the thermostat is running at mains voltage.

  • The wires from the external thermostat / relay need to be passed through the cap of the probe attached to the back of the boiler. These are then connected to the two terminals labelled as '13' on the motherboard wiring diagram - see manual page 48.

  • Finally, the temperature control knob on the control manual needs to be turned to its lowest setting (15 degrees) in order that the stove responds to the call from the external thermostat.

If you wish to further control the stove via an external programmer, this can be achieved by using a prgrammable room thermostat. The procedure is as follows:

  • Follow the procedure described above to link an external thermostat to the stove, connecting instead a programmable 'stat to the same pins. Note that a relay must still be used to provide a volt free signal into the motherboard, if the programmer output is at mains voltage.

  • Referring to the user/instal manual, Page 48 - Electrical Connections - locate the two terminals on the motherboard that the internal thermostat on the boiler connects to - labelled '2' on the wiring key. They are next to the terminals that you connect the external thermostat/programmer to.

  • In place of the internal thermostat, connect a 4.9 KOhm resistor across terminals '2'.

  • Turn the temperature regulation knob on the control panel down to minimum (15 degrees).

  • Enable the Auto Eco function on the boiler - refer to pages 36 & 37 in the manual for this procedure.

Once set up in this way, the external programmer/stat controls the boiler to fire up on demand. When there is no demand, the boiler continues to fire at minimum rate for 20 minutes, then shuts down. In this way, once the programmed heating period is over, and the thermostat no longer issues a call for heating, the stove does not fire. Note that the stove actually remains 'on' at the boiler's control panel but effectively in standby until the next timed heating period causes the room 'stat to issue a call to the stove, and it will commence ignition and warm up.
