All stoves and boilers: Unusual activity - possible reverse polarity

Solution

There have been several reports of boilers and stoves exhibiting unusual behaviour when first switched on, with some or all of the following activity displayed:

  • Pellet auger constantly turning
  • Pellet igniter staying on regardless of boiler activity
  • Unusual error messages - either those not expected for the given boiler type or not related to current stove activity - i.e: over temperature alarm when stove is cold.
  • Unusual information given on control panel - i.e. 'Shutdown' message given when boiler is switched on and attempting ignition.
  • Inability to switch boiler off once switched on.

Although the underlying causes of each such problem should be investigated in the first instance if they appear in isolation, if a number of these occur at the same time, particularly if the product is new and is being operated for the first time, there could be two possible reasons. Firstly, the motherbaord may be at fault and require replacement. However before undertaking a swap, the polarity of the mains supply from the power switch/socket assembly must be checked. There have been several reports of the live and neutral connections from the power switch being inverted where connected at the motherboard where the above symptoms are displayed. The same check should also be made at the power switch.
